FOCUS ON COROMANDEL

Sunset from Guest LoungeVisit Coromandel Peninsula

The Coromandel Peninsula is a favourite holiday spot for New Zealanders. Thames, the area's main town, had a brief but frenzied gold mining boom in the 1800s which left a legacy of attractive Victorian buildings.

Today the Peninsula is world famous for its beautiful beaches and relaxed lifestyle and offers a variety of coastal walks and hikes into the hills.

From Thames, an enjoyable drive up the Pohutukawa Coastline brings you to Coromandel township, an ideal base to explore the area. The town offers an exciting array of cafes and arts & craft stores.

On the eastern side of the peninsula you can visit Hot Water Beach, one of the region's most fascinating places. For one hour either side of low tide, you can dig in the sand for hot spring water and make your own spa pool.
